I wanted to look back at my time in lockdown and be proud that I did something to help those less fortunate in these extraordinary times. When I came across a Facebook post one day on a community feed looking for volunteers, I instantly reached out and signed up to help Don’s Local Action Group, which supports vulnerable people in the areas of Wandsworth, Kingston & Merton.
The group have set up stands outside supermarkets looking for food donations from shoppers. That’s where I come in! Along with one other volunteer, we set up a stand outside the supermarket and inform customers queuing why we are collecting food donations, where they are going to and what items are required on that particular day. The generosity of people during this pandemic has been nothing short of amazing and inspiring.
So far, since the group have started, they run 3 hubs, 22 collection points and have over 870 volunteers across South London. This has allowed them to distribute around 2,600 food packs a week to those who need it the most. Not a single penny has gone into this operation which is overwhelming. Joining the local action group has not only given me a real sense of pride in myself, but also in the local community, showing that in times of crisis, people come together to help and look out for those who need it the most.
